Schumer Applauds Dairy Investigation

U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer has released the following statement regarding the U.S. Department of Justice's announcement that they will be investigating Dean Foods' purchase of Foremost Farms USA's Consumer Products Division. Sen. Schumer has been calling for an antitrust investigation into the anticompetitive practices among the nation's large dairy processers, as there has been a large drop in the price of milk paid to dairy farmers without a comparable drop in the price of a gallon of milk in the store.

Recently the US DOJ agreed to send their top antitrust investigator to New York to meet with farmers and evaluate the magnitude of the problem.

"Today's announcement is a step in the right direction and a signal from the department of justice that there is something rotten going on in our dairy markets," said Sen. Schumer. "This was the right decision, and I will continue to push the department of justice to expand and intensify this investigation."
